The former defense grounds ‘De 1800 Roeden’, part of ‘De Stelling van Amsterdam’ is one of the old ammunition storage buildings, which has been converted to a studio building for artists and other creative professions as a part of the Project Broedplaats (Hotbed) Amsterdam.
Whilst maintaining the characteristic exterior shape, in total 21 studios have been created within the existing walls and roof. This required installation of a new steel construction that is partly supported by the old foundations. Besides the required flexibility, the use of hat-shaped beams enabled thinner floors and made it possible to create two extra floors.
The studios in the attic, the staircases and shared entrances receive daylight from two large glass boxes penetrating the existing roof surface. The roof of these glass boxes is transparent over the staircases, allowing daylight to penetrate deeply into the building. All hallway walls have been constructed in glass bricks, allowing light from the studios into the communal areas too.
All interference has been kept sober and minimalistic, in keeping with the former military-untilitarian character of the building, the grounds and its new purpose.
Walls, floors and roofs have additional insulation and the original steel doors and window frames have been fitted with wooden secondary frames and doors. Additionally, the use of a heating and cooling system based on a geothermal pump made this an energy efficient building.
The entire renovation and alteration has been done in-company by the client with help from the future tenants.
