Redevelopment of Roosendaal station in motion

Ruland Architects designs a dance centre in a national monument station building

The station of Roosendaal has been thoroughly renovated, redeveloped and prepared for future use by Ruland Architects. Together with the NS, the province of Noord-Brabant, the municipality of Roosendaal and Dansplein Roosendaal this was the reason to investigate whether it is possible to establish a dance school and a high-quality catering facility in the highly monumental, vacant part of the station of Roosendaal.

The central location makes it possible to have multiple cultural institutions with a great appeal within the region work together and cluster at the station. The station building transforms from a public transport hub to a destination and at the same time becomes the entrance to the city centre for train passengers.

In the design by Ruland Architects, the original monumental value and original structures of the national monument building form the starting point for the new use. By using the interesting, but vacant waiting rooms as a dance centre, both the station and the immediate surroundings are considerably enlivened.

In the former royal waiting room and the 1st and 2nd class waiting rooms, three dance halls will be built. The connecting passage will remain publicly accessible as an integral part of the station. The former inspection room at the end of the passage will serve as a large theatre dance hall. The new grandstand with changing rooms and toilets underneath will make this beautiful monumental space suitable for dance performances. The former 3rd class waiting room will be transformed into a catering facility. As part of the dance centre, these facilities will make the stay at the station more pleasant for both the traveller and visitors to the dance centre due to their attractive location next to the station hall.
